Tignes Ski Resort

Tignes ski resort is based in the Tarentaise Valley in the French Alps. You can ski as high as 3456 metres on the Tignes Glacier, which is called the Grande Motte, and enables skiing all year round. Tignes offers access to Val d'Isère too - and together they are called Espace Killy.

You will find everything required for your ski group from beginner to expert skiing terrain.

Skiing and snowboarding in Tignes

Beginner skiers in Tignes:

Tignes has 4 nursery slopes in four key areas, which are Val Claret, Tignes Les Lac, Tignes Le Lavachet and Tignes Les Brevieres.

There are various beginner specific lifts ranging such as drag lifts and chairlifts. All beginner lifts are easily accessible from the villages.

In Tignes Val Claret there is a children’s beginner ski area with a ‘magic carpet’.

The following lifts are free of charge:

  • Tignes le Lac: Rosset chairlift and magic carpet
  • Tignes Val Claret: Claret draglift and Bollin chairlift
  • Tignes le Lavachet: Lavachet draglift
  • Tignes 1800: Magic carpet
  • Tignes Les Brévières: Pitôts draglift and Brévières chairlift
  • There are green and blue runs further up the mountain, for when beginners are more confident.

Intermediate skiers in Tignes:

Intermediate skiers in Tignes can head up the Palafour or Chardonnet from Tignes Lac, which provides access to rolling blue runs that lead back to the village.

At the top of Chaudannes chairlift various blue gentle pistes such as the Petit Col are available.

One of the longest blues down is the Rhododendron, from which you can take Melezes and Mrytilles taking you down to Les Brevieres.

Take the Brevieres and Boissons lifts to attempt blue runs down to Tignes Les Brevieres or Tignes Les Boisses.

Expert skiers in Tignes:

Tignes is an off-piste playground. Always remember to take the right avalanche gear with you and where necessary take a guide. You certainly will not tire of the off-piste and touring around Tignes.

There are plenty of off-piste sections that can be taken advantage of by the side of the piste.

Off-Piste Skiing in Tignes

Les Brevieres is great in a whiteout as there are plenty of trees.

Neither Tignes Le Lac nor Tignes Val Claret have a huge amount off-piste skiing routes, but the sides of the piste provide deeper snow.

The Grande Motte often has fresh powder to the sides of the pistes. Early risers who get up there after a dump can get first tracks!

The closest airport to Tignes

Chambéry airport is the closest airport to Tignes and the Espace Killy ski region. It will take approximately 2 hours 15 minutes from Chambéry airport to Tignes, direct on the motorway. However there are more frequent flights, at the most convenient times, at Geneva, Lyon and Grenoble airports.

Lyon Airport to Tignes Transfers

Lyon airport is also known as Lyon - Saint Exupery and has more choice in flight times than Chambery.

There are loads of airlines that fly to Lyon, but the more well known are EasyJet UK, British Airways and Swissair.

Chambery Airport to Tignes Transfers

Chambery airport is the closest airport to Tignes, and therefore is the shortest airport transfer. It is also known as Chambéry Savoie.

Airlines that fly to Chambery are Flybe, British Airways and Transavia.

Flights can sometimes be hard to find because there are a limited number of them. Flights to Chambery airport are available from the following UK airports: Leeds, Manchester, Doncaster, Birmingham, Norwich, Stansted, London City, Cardiff and Exeter.

Eurostar snow train to Tignes

The “Eurostar snow train” is a train to the Alps. The route is from London St Pancreas International, or from Ashford in Kent, direct to Lyon Part-Dieu, which is Lyon's central train station.

Direct day trains to the French Alps are run on Saturdays between December-April and direct night trains run on Fridays from January-April.

One of our professional drivers can pick you up from Lyon train station, driving you direct to Tignes.

Alternatively, travel by train from London, to Lyon then on to Bourg-saint-Maurice which is closer to Tignes ski resort. We can pick you up from Bourg train station and take you through the mountains to Tignes.
